MEON RIDING CLUB HOLIDAY AT WELLINGTON RIDING, HECKFIELD: Tuesday 20 September – Friday 23 September 2011
(Thanks to Pippa Griffin for putting in this report – photos are available under Photo Gallery on the Meon website - or click here.) Fantastic fun was had by all at camp at Wellington Riding. Superb instructors put us through our paces in all three disciplines. The action-packed ‘holiday’ began immediately with horses and riders heading straight into a flatwork session on Tuesday afternoon. The next three days saw a packed and varied itinerary – with over 10 hours in the saddle in total. Each day, riders could choose from dressage, showjumping and cross-country. The two schooling sessions per day were complemented with fascinating lectures and demos – from long-reining to free-school jumping an unbroken youngster and a stunning dressage display with coach Nereide Goodman talking us through the paces and performance of a Prix St Georges-level horse with her pupil Sarah on board. A fascinating coaching session saw us working in pairs to improve our position, while riding some very cute and entertaining Wellington-borrowed ponies. Jenny Martin’s giggles could be heard the length of the full-size arena!
Over the three days, both horses and riders progressed in leaps and bounds - most of which were intentional! Bravery and boldness were the name of the game. Keri Barnjum saw her four-year old Bea grow up before her eyes – taking on board everything that was asked of her – from working amongst a group in an indoor arena, to gridwork, showjumping and tackling cross-country fences – the likes of which she’d never seen before. Ony Rogers, Andrea Bishop and Pippa Griffin rode (several) unknown Wellington horses around XC and SJ courses. Renaye Hawes’ loan horse Millie – who until two months ago only knew straight lines and hacking – found herself doing travers and half-pass. Jenny Martin and Duncan, Vicky Lewis and Otto proved you don’t have to like showjumping to excel at it. Kate Latchem and Oscar, Penny Briggs and Warrior made XC look easy and Steve Readings and Faith, Derek Amesbury and Manny took everything in their horses’ strides. Sophia Halder and the stunning Condor proved a classy act – with inspiring dressage and showjumping displays which left those watching in awe. Great fun and many thanks to Penny Briggs for organising it all.
